Kurt Andernach started his career as a cabinet maker apprentice in his native Germany. Following his professional training, Kurt spent several years hitchhiking through Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia, exploring different cultures and languages. He eventually moved to the United States to study architecture and holds a graduate degree from the University of Chicago in installation art. Upon moving to New York City, Kurt started his architectural enterprise Andernachconcepts with a focus on commercial retail design. Among his clients were Diane von Fürstenberg, Swarovski Crystal, Bloomingdales, Bergdorf Goodman and many more.

Kurt Andernach started And-Hof Animals + Permaculture in the Spring of 2010, when he was at a local coffee shop waiting patiently for his usual order, a double Espresso, to slowly drip into a tiny cup. Kurt casually mentioned to the coffee shop owner that he’d been dreaming for years of waking up to the sound of a crowing rooster. A big smile broke out on the coffee shop owner’s face. “You have free Espressos for the rest of your life,” he proclaimed, “on one condition, you need to give a home to a beloved rooster, I know. He is in danger of being killed by angry neighbors who want his crows silenced forever.”

Shortly thereafter, Henry and his lovebird Henrietta were nestling safe and sound in the little coop outside Kurt quickly built for them beside his woodshed. Little did Kurt know at the time, not only had the lives of these two Birds changed forever, but his had too. For without planning it, Kurt started what was to become And-Hof Animals, Sanctuary for Farm Animals + Permaculture…
